What a fantastic day myself and Orla MacKenzie The What a fantastic day myself and Orla MacKenzie The Gamekeepers Daughter had last Monday. It's been a while since I've been on a driven day, it brought back lots of memories of when I started out on my Gamekeeping career and spent many wonderful years on a commercial driven shoot, I also understood what I've been missing, the guns, the beaters, the pickers up and the banter, it's what a driven day is all about 😁. It was great for Orla too, she got to experience another aspect of the varied roles of Keepering. So, next year we are going to.make the effort to attend more driven days as beaters or part of a picking up team. A huge thank you to Byron Pace and his parents for opening up there home to us and keeping us fed and watered. A big thank you to everyone on the day that looked after us both, we were made to feel very welcome.Thank you to Ian W. Rae for chauffeuring us around (Orla now wants a Grenadier 😂). And of course a thank you to my boss for making the day happen, it was fantastic 👏. #fieldsports #drivenshooting #gamekeeper #mentalhealth #goodfriends

This year Orla MacKenzie The Gamekeepers Daughter joined me and was thrown in at the deep end 😂. A huge thank you to Stewart Blair and his team from UHI for looking after her. Orla did very well for her first Clay shooting event, she did everyone proud 👏 Lots of money raised for Countryside Learning Scotland and The World Pheasant Association. Last night saw me out checking the lambing fields Last night saw me out checking the lambing fields for fox activity as a couple of lambs had been taken. Nothing was seen in one field so I decided to drive the hill road and sweep the hill as I went with the lamp. Not far in a "ping" of eye shine came back and I noticed the eyes were high an in a tree, at first I thought it was an owl, so I whipped out the Habrok thermal binoculars to identify. Now there were two hear signatures and one clearly in a tree, I identified that as a pine marten and assumed the heat signature below was another pine marten as it was slightly obscured by the tree base. Well,,,, once the lower heat signature moved I could see it was a fox.... As you'll see from the video, the fox was banking on a meal. I have never seen foxes try to predate pine martens before. I totally understand that a fox is an opportunist and would try its luck in a passing opportunity, but we watched this fox actively hunt and pursue the pine marten for a long time, it was determined to get it. Every time the marten jumped out of a tree, the fox would chase it and then wait under the tree it was up. Has anyone else seen this ?
